Project “A doctor for the village” was born from the vital necessity of a doctor in the villages we visit. The lack of medical attention a reality we witness every time we visit the country.
As we knew Francis (an experienced doctor) was working with Ambo´s public hospital, we arranged to freely give medical consultation to whomever needed it in the village, giving access to required medicine to more than 100 people.
In Ethiopia free healthcare is unheard of, and the visit to the doctor plus the expenditure on medicine costs well over 1/3 of a regular salary. That is why almost no one can afford to go to the doctor and most of the illnesses we faced when giving medical consultation were not recent, but chronic diseases people had been suffering for a long time.
The project was a complete success, and VPA will carry on with this initiative whenever we are lucky enough to travel with a doctor.
